Overview:

Set in an idyllic valley, hemmed in by hills, the Mai Chau area is a world away from Hanoi’s hustle. The small town of Mai Chau itself is unappealing, but just outside the patchwork of rice fields rolls out, speckled by tiny Thai villages where visitors doss down for the night in traditional stilt houses and wake up to a rural soundtrack defined by gurgling irrigation streams and birdsong. You can also watch local farmers and how they work in the rice fields.

The villagers are mostly White Thai, distantly related to tribes in Thailand, Laos and China. Most no longer wear traditional dress, but the Thai women are masterful weavers producing plenty of traditional-style textiles. Locals do not employ strong-arm sales tactics here: polite bargaining is the norm.

Due to its popularity, some find the Mai Chau tour group experience too sanitised. If you’re looking for hard-core exploration, this is not the place, but for biking, hiking and relaxation, calm Mai Chau fits the bill nicely.

Itinerary

DAY1:

7:30-8:00 – Pickup at your hotel in the Old Quarter in our comfortable van
10:00 – Short break
11:30-12:00 – Scenic photo stop of Mai Chau valley/arrive in Mai Chau
12:15 – Traditional lunch in local village (vegetarian available)
14:30-17:00 – Bicycle ride with local tour guide, see farmers working in fields, locals weaving scarves and visit surrounding  peaceful villages.
17:00-19:00 – Free time for bicycling, walking, shopping
19:00 – Enjoy the Dinner
20:00 – Watch Thai traditional dance in the stilt house
Enjoy Tradidional alcohol (ruou can) with the community

DAY 2

07:30 – Have breakfast at the homestay

08:00 – Go with a local Thai tour guide to visit more remote rural villages: Na Meo, Na Mo and Xam Pa villages to understand more about their culture and customs

12:00 – Back to the homestay for lunch and check-out

13:00 -15:00 – Free time for shopping and relaxing.

15:30 – Get on the van/bus to drive back to Hanoi.

19:00 – Arrive in Hanoi Old quater. Drop you off at your hotel

Notes

• The itinerary can be changed due to weather, tide levels and operating conditions.
• Special request (diet or vegetarian, …) should be sent before your departure date.
• You should take long sleeve clothes, hat, trekking shoes, sunscreen, mosquito repelent, and flash light.

Join-in-group tour : You join the tour some other tourists. You share the bus, boat, tour guide, so the price is cheaper. You have to be on time and follow the fixed itinerary and timetable.
Private tour : The bus, boat and tour guide is reserved for your group only. The timetable and itinerary can be flexible. (For private overnight trip to Halong bay, when booking please confirm if you want to take private boat or group sharing).
